Long Island Fire Chief Quits After Trysts Probe

The chief of a volunteer fire department on Long Island has resigned after officials accused him of using a department vehicle for romantic trysts in the woods.

Newsday reports that East Rockaway Fire Chief Steven Torborg resigned March 22 after village officials told him he would otherwise face possible discipline for misuse of his official vehicle.

Village officials were alerted to possible wrongdoing by GPS reports. They hired a private investigator to track Torborg.

The investigator reportedly found Torborg and a Levittown resident "in various stages of undress.''

GPS reports show 12 stops to the off-road location between Dec. 9 and March 18.

Torborg told News 12 Long Island that the village's allegations give an inaccurate and incomplete picture of the circumstances surrounding his resignation.
