Falling Tombstone Breaks Woman's Leg During Burial

A local woman paying her final respects to a loved one was rushed to a hospital when a tombstone fell on her leg and shattered it, according to a report.

Maria Figueroa was at the burial of cousin Manuel Reyes at Harsimus Cemetery in Jersey City Wednesday when the 50-pound tombstone tipped over on her, NJ.com reported.

"I thought she was going to lose consciousness," said her daughter, Zamaida Figueroa. "I had some water so I threw it on her face so she wouldn't pass out."

Relatives said it took eight family members to lift the tombstone off Figueroa.

"This was just horrible," Zamaida Figueroa said. "We just lost my uncle and now this happens when we are burying him."

Reyes was stabbed to death last week.

Figueroa, a 50-year-old Jersey City resident, underwent surgery at Jersey City Medical Center Wednesday night.

A cemetery spokesman said someone leaned on the stone, causing it to fall. When asked to elabroate, he hung up, NJ.com reported.
