Rocks Rain Down on Midtown Intersection, Hit Man in Arm: Witnesses

Sidewalks on a busy intersection near Manhattan's Columbus Circle were cordoned off Friday night after rocks came falling out of the sky.

Witnesses told News 4 that at least one man was hit in the arm by the falling debris at West 57th Street and Eighth Avenue at about 9 p.m. Shattered glass at a news stand and a crack in at least one car's windshield were both observed at the scene.

Witnesses said that they didn't think the rocks -- which were small, smooth and decorative -- came tumbling down as an accident.

Police haven't yet commented on the situation, but there were multiple officers at the scene and could be seen searching buildings in the area. NYPD aviation units could also be seen searching terraces on the hgih-rise apartments in the area.

Jesica Spitzer said she was walking home with Stephen Lobosco when they heard something crashing down from above. Then, they said, they were turned away by an officer as they approached the intersection .

"It's not every day that you're just walking down the street and there's rocks falling on your head," Spitzer.

It's not clear if anyone was seriously injured or if any arrests had been made.
