FDR Drive to Get Smoother in $11 Million Makeover

The notoriously bumpy FDR Drive is getting an $11 million makeover.

The city's transportation commissioner announced Monday the first end-to-end resurfacing of the FDR Drive in its nearly 50-year history.

In past years, the city has patched up the crumbling FDR Drive one pothole at a time. But now the green light has come from City Hall, and crews will mill and pave from South Street heading north to 125th Street on weeknights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. for the next four months. Then they'll turn around and do the southbound side, with two lanes closed during the work.

For drivers frequently on the highway, the work can't come soon enough.

"In the extreme right lane, it's a roller coaster ride," said Bertram Duke. "If you're doing more than 30, you're going to bounce."

Patricia Favale of Gramercy said the highway even has its own soundtrack: "Bumpity, bumpity, bumpity, bumpity."

DOT crew member John Rodriguez said, "Believe me, we understand. The car insurance, the potholes, we know what you go through."

Transportation officials asked for patience through the duration of the repaving project.
