Explosion Damages Car, Injures Driver

"Never seen anything like this around here."

A car explosion in New Rochelle rocked people out of bed overnight.

"We heard a big bang and our house shook."

That's what prompted Joe Williams and his father to go outside and check out the scene on Charles Street in New Rochelle around 11:15 Monday night.

"My dad comes barreling down the steps.  He's like, "Call 911!  C
all 911!  There's a fire!  There's a fire!"

What they saw was a burning car and an injured driver.

"Never seen anything like this around here," Williams said.

Police say an explosion started the fire.

As of early Tuesday morning, they said they weren't sure if it was an accident or a criminal act.
The car was parked outside a social club near the intersection of Charles Street and Union Avenue.

There are reports that the victim might have been inside the club before the explosion.

The driver was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.

Police say his injuries are not life-threatening.
His name has not been released.
