Ex-Cop: I Killed Girlfriend by Accident

A former New York Police Department narcotics officer says he was trying to kill himself when he shot his girlfriend dead.

Jerry Bowen's statement to police was released Friday as his lawyer entered a not guilty plea for him to murder and other charges in a Brooklyn court. Bowens participated by video from a psychiatric ward.

His lawyer requested a psychiatric examination to see whether Bowens is fit for trial.

Bowens' statement said he argued with girlfriend Catherine Donofrio March 8 about where she'd spent the night.

He said he threatened to commit suicide and cocked his gun, and it "accidentally went off,'' shooting Donofrio in the head.

He says the gun went off again when Donofrio's friend Melissa Simmons rushed in and knocked his arm. Simmons suffered graze wounds.
