Ex-Cop Arrested in Double Shooting

An ex-officer who had been caught up in a drug inquiry was arrested Monday in connection with a shooting that killed one 28-year-old woman and injured another, police said.

Officers responding to a 911 call Sunday found Catherine Donofrio, 28, fatally shot in the head in her condo in the Greenpoint sectoin of Brooklyn. Her friend Melissa Simmons, 28, had been grazed in the head by a bullet and shot in the arm. She was hospitalized in stable condition.

Jerry Bowens, who is married, allegedly hunted down Donofrio around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Bowens shot Donofrio in the head, then fired at Simmons, grazing her head and hitting her in the arm, according to the Daily News.

Bowens spent almost 12 hours on the run before police found him and took him into custody in Staten Island overnight.

Bowens had been charged last year with drug possession and other offenses after he and another officer were accused by internal affairs investigators of stealing cocaine and money to reward an informant for tipping them off. He is no longer an active member of the New York Police Department.

Police had also investigated allegations that Bowens had sex with a woman serving as an informant. At the time, his lawyer denied any wrongdoing.
