A federal emergency management authority mistakenly issued a "code red" alert to evacuate all of Suffolk County on Saturday in advance of the storm, authorities said.
A second message was quickly sent to clarify that a voluntary evacuation is in effect only for Fire Island, County Executive Steven Bellone said.
The inaccurate alert was sent to some residents, he said.
Bellone offered no explanation as to how the incorrect alert was issued.
