Elizabeth Announces Cash for Guns

A northern New Jersey city will conduct a "Cash for Guns" program on the next two Saturdays.

Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage announced Tuesday that the gun buyback program will take place at police headquarters on July 17 and 24.

Police will offer cash to anyone turning in a firearm: $200 for assault weapons, $150 for handguns and $75 for rifles or shoguns.

Bollwage said the program is being made possible by "a generous donation by an anonymous source."

Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow said the program ensures that unwanted guns do not fall into the wrong hands.

A gun buyback program last year in Newark, Irvington and East Orange resulted in more than 1,000 guns being turned in.
