NYC Robber Admits to Elevator Ice Pick Robberies

John Martinez admits to threatening residents of Stuyvesant Town, among others

A parolee has admitted to wielding an ice pick in several stickups in New York City elevators.

John Martinez pleaded guilty on Thursday to burglary and robbery charges in five separate incidents, including three robberies in the Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper apartment complex in Manhattan.

Authorities say some incidents involved an ice pick, others a knife. In one robbery, authorities say Martinez threatened a mother with an ice pick in front of her 3-year-old son.

Court documents say the 40-year-old Martinez told a detective that he just goes out and does these things. The papers say Martinez said he was sick and wanted help.

His Bronx lawyer says Martinez has reported a history of psychiatric hospitalization.
