Police: Elderly NJ Man Kills Wife, Then Self

Police say he called his daughter first and told her what he was about to do

Police in northern New Jersey say an 82-year-old man fatally shot his wife after calling his daughter to tell her what he was about to do. Police say he then killed himself.

Barbara Ellis, 79, was shot in the head Friday at the couple's home in Mahwah, on the New York State border.

Police tell The Record of Woodland Park Harry Ellis was found wounded in the backyard, a revolver underneath him.

Both were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Bergen County SWAT officers rushed to the house when the daughter reported her father's call but couldn't make contact with him. Police believe he was still inside the house when they arrived.

The daughter told police she knew of no problems her parents were having. No suicide note was found.
