Drunk Driver Goes Wrong Way on LIE, Then Pulls U-Turn Across All Lanes: Police

An alleged drunk driver went the wrong way down the Long Island Expressway, then pulled a U-Turn in which he crossed all lanes of traffic, police said.

Jaime Rivas, 56, of Haddonfield, New Jersey, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless endangerment and driving the wrong way, among other charges, Nassau County police said. It wasn't clear whether he had an attorney.

Rivas was driving a 2007 Mercedes Benz early Saturday when someone called 911 to report the wrong-way driver on the Long Island Expressway near Syosset.

Police officers saw the vehicle driving eastbound in the westbound HOV lane near Exit 40 and passing several vehicles. The driver then made a U-turn across all lanes of traffic and stopped on the shoulder near Exit 44, police said.

Officers stopped him and said he had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes and the vehicle smelled of alcohol.
