Cop Shoots Drug Suspect's Dad in Bronx Raid

Police say a drug raid in the Bronx went awry when an officer accidentally fired his gun and wounded the suspect's 76-year-old father.

The shooting happened at around 7 a.m. Saturday at an apartment building on Evergreen Avenue in the Soundview section.

Police say the wounded man was hospitalized in stable condition and expected to survive.  He wasn't alleged to have done anything wrong or to have had any knowledge of his son's crimes, police said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly visited the victim at Jacobi Medical Center Saturday afternoon and also visited with members of his family, police said.

The suspect, Alberto Colon, 41, was in custody and a quantity of heroin was found in the apartment.  Charges haven't been formalies, police said.

A law enforcement official says it appears that officer Andrew McCormack fired accidentally as the raid unfolded.

McCormack is the son of a police officer, Joseph McCormack, who was killed in the line of duty in 1983.
