Suspect Jumps in River to Flee Police After Alleged Heroin Deal

A suspect being chased by police after an alleged heroin deal leaped into a New Jersey river and swam away but was caught by cops who commandeered a boat.

Police in Toms River say officers observed what appeared to be a drug deal inside a car outside a hotel last Friday.

When officers pulled over the car about a block away, the 28-year-old passenger jumped out and ran off.

Two patrolmen chased him toward the river, where he jumped in and began swimming.

The officers were then joined by a sergeant, who hailed a boat that was passing by. The owner let the officers on board and took them to the swimming suspect, who surrendered.

He was charged with obstructing the administration of law, and another man was charged in the drug deal.
