Woman in Disabled Car Killed in Long Island Highway Crash: Police

A Long Island woman sitting inside a disabled car on the side of a highway was killed when a car struck her vehicle from behind, pushing it into the back of a flatbed tow truck that had stopped to assist her, police say.

Jessica Ortiz, 21, was in her sedan on the right shoulder of the westbound Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore when another vehicle hit her at about 12:30 p.m., according to Suffolk police.

Ortiz's vehicle then hit the back of the tow truck in front of her, police said.

Ortiz was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where she was pronounced dead.

The 51-year-old driver of the vehicle that hit her was also taken to the hospital. He's in critical but stable condition, police said.

The tow truck driver was not injured.
