Driver Charged in Crash That Killed Pedestrian on Busy Brooklyn Sidewalk

The driver of the car who plowed onto a busy Brooklyn sidewalk and fatally mowed down a man in front of a beauty supply store has been charged, police say.

Paul Omoregie, 58, has been charged with driving with a suspended license and driving without a license, police said Tuesday.

The cause of the crash on Flatbush Avenue in Prospect Park South remains under investigation. The 50-year-old pedestrian who was killed has been identified as Charles Kinyeti of East Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Omeregie had a 3-year-old passenger in the car, and the two sustained minor injuries in the crash, police said. Another woman on the sidewalk was struck by debris, and all three were taken to Kings County Hospital to be treated after the crash.

Attorney information for Omeregie was not immediately available.

Surveillance video obtained by NBC 4 New York shows people walking outside the store Monday evening just as the vehicle flies onto the sidewalk, taking down the tree as it flips over and lands upside down. A man walking in a suit and talking on the phone is in the car's direct path, and he appears to notice the vehicle barreling toward him only the instant before it hits him, attempting unsuccessfully to jump out of the way.

A distraught neighbor of Kinyeti who only gave his name as Matrid said he'd known him for 16 years, "like he was my brother."

"He was a decent man, a decent guy," said Matrid. "He worked all his life."

The deadly accident adds to the tally of vehicle-related fatalities in New York City since Halloween, which now stands at 12.
