Dozens Left Homeless by NJ Apartment Building Fire

At least 37 families were evacuated from their homes after a late-night fire swept through a five-story apartment building in New Jersey, authorities said Saturday.

Dozens of firefighters fought the stubborn blaze on 51st Street in West New York for several hours and were still at the scene Saturday morning. The fire, which was reported at about 10:30 p.m., was still raging three hours later.

One firefighter sustained burns and was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

The cause of the fire, which started on the top floor of the building, is under investigation, but not thought to be suspicious.

The Red Cross was assisting more than 60 people who were displaced by the fire, authorities said.

The building where the fire started was evacuated as was two adjacent buildings, officials said.
