Ailing Dolphin Off L.I. Has Died

Scientists say boaters have found a dead dolphin in the Great South Bay off New York's Jones Beach.

Kim Durham of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation says it matched the description of a sick dolphin seen two days earlier in the same waters.

Boaters found the dead dolphin around 11:30 a.m. Friday. It was near a drawbridge by a parkway leading to the beach.

A necropsy on the male common dolphin was planned to determine what caused its death.

A 6-foot dolphin was first sighted near a parkway bridge on Wednesday. It appeared to be bleeding around its fin, and had cuts and scrapes on its body. It had been swimming in circles and bobbing its head, generally signs of a distressed animal.
