How to Prevent Your Pets From Getting Spooked on Fourth of July

Whether your neighbor has fireworks in his or her backyard or you live within earshot of Macy's spectacular display over the East River, the noise associated with the celebrations can terrify your pet -- with potentially tragic consequences.

According to Pet Amber Alert, an organization that uses technology to quickly spread the word about lost dogs, cats or other pet, 30 percent more pets are lost between July 4 and July 6 each year, when fireworks are rampant across the region, than any other comparable two-day period.

Mark Jakubczak, founder of Pet Amber Alert, offers the following five tips for keeping your pets safe:

1. Stay Inside: Try to keep your pet indoors at all times during holiday celebrations. Ideally, someone stays home with your pet. If you must go out, be sure to keep your animal  leashed.

2. Make Them Feel Safe: Comfort your pets as needed. Make sure they can access their crates or other "safe" places. If necessary, ask your veterinarian or local pet retailer about natural calming products, anxiety wraps and other products.

3. Minimize Outside Noise: Keep your windows closed and your TV on to help mask the noise outside.

4. Act Normal: Your pet takes cues from you and your family. Go about your normal routine as much as possible.

5. Take Precautions: There are a number of lost-pet devices and services available. Make sure your pet is micro-chipped or outfitted with another type of tracking device in the event it runs away.
