    What to Know

    • Mahfuza Rahman, a 30-year-old nurse at Bellevue, was last seen on Dec. 8, 2015

    • After Rahman was reported missing, police searched the area near her home in the Bronx and dug up part of the yard but found nothing

    • Travel records show that Rahman’s husband and daughter left the country, police said, but there was no record she went with them

Police said Sunday that the disappearance of a Bellevue Hospital nurse, who went missing nearly two years ago, is suspicious.

It's the first major update in the case of 30-year-old Mahfuza Rahman since March of last year, when a co-worker at the hospital reported her missing. The report was filed nearly three months after she was last seen on Dec. 8, 2015.

After Rahman was reported missing, police searched the area near her home on East 198th Street in the Bronx and dug up part of the front yard, but they found no signs of her.

The search was delayed because her husband told her colleagues she had a family emergency and needed to take time off work, the Daily News reported. Her husband told her co-workers and neighbors that she had flown back to their native Bangladesh to care for her parents, who were injured in an accident, the paper said.

Neighbor Jose Garcia told NBC New York the last time he saw Rahman's husband, he told him to watch his house so he could go to his native country, Bangladesh.

Travel records show that Rahman’s husband and daughter left the country, police said. But no records showed that Rahman traveled with them.

Earlier this year, authorities told PIX 11 credit records showed the husband bought a campaign hatchet and packing tape two days after his wife was last seen. At the time, a detective told PIX Rahman was believed dead.

Neighbor Jamie Hewin said he has lived in the neighborhood for about a year and had never seen anything out of the ordinary at Rahman's house.
