Switch Problems Cause Delays for LIRR Trains Leaving Penn Station

Switch problems at Jamaica station in Queens were causing delays for Long Island Rail Road trains going into and out of Penn Station on Friday evening, the MTA said.

A 3:05 p.m. train from Atlantic Terminal to Hempstead was running about 15 minutes late because of the switch problem, as was a 3:14 p.m. train from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma.

A 3 p.m. train from Penn Station to Babylon was also running about 15 minutes late because of the switch problems.

The delays come a day after LIRR riders had hellish evening and morning commutes for hundreds of LIRR riders due to power problems at Penn Station and in East River tunnels.

Commuters are fed up with the constant trouble at Penn Station and they worry about the work still to come. Ray Villeda reports.

Evening rush-hour cancellations and delays on the Long Island Rail Road have reached their highest level in 10 years, according to transit data analyzed by the Wall Street Journal.

Problems at Amtrak-managed Penn Station have caused many of this year's problems, but the LIRR's performance also has become increasingly unreliable over the past four years, the Journal found.

From 2008 through 2012, the LIRR's systemwide on-time evening rush-hour performance averaged 93 percent during the first four months of those years. Over the last five years, it dropped to 87 percent.
