Dead Fetus Found at NJ Sewage Plant

Workers found a dead fetus at a New Jersey sewage plant, police said Monday.

The Newark Police Department's homicide squad is investigating, and an autopsy is planned. Officials said the fetus was not full term, adding that it was only about five inches long.

Todd McClendon, a Newark police spokesman, said the fetus was discovered Monday morning in sewage coming into the Passaic Valley Sewage Plant near Port Newark. He said there are no definitive indications that a crime was committed.

The sewage plant serves 30 communities in three different counties, so determining where the fetus came from could be difficult. It might have been improperly disposed of by a hospital or medical facility.
