Dead Chickens, Rotting Fish Left in Man's Room

Housing officials are trying to figure out who did it and why

New Haven housing officials are dealing with the mystery of a gruesome bloodbath found in a New Haven residence -- one made of chicken blood.

Earlier this week, someone left a disgusting mess of slaughtered chickens on Philip Elliott's bed and put rotting fish underneath it, police said. Housing officials are trying to figure out why.

Elliott rented one of three bedrooms on the second floor of a Lombard Street house for $150 a week, and shared the kitchen and bathroom with other tenants.

One of Elliott's roommates woke up Monday and smelled a vile odor, police said. The building superintendent went upstairs and found three dead chickens on the bed and blood splattered on the floor. There were fish under the bed and also in the closet.

Some of the residents suspect it's the work of the Brooklyn N.Y. -based landlord, Smarck Salomon, because of an ongoing rent dispute, according to the New Haven Register.

Police told the newspaper there's no evidence linking him to the incident.

Salomon wanted Elliott out right away and had removed Elliott’s bedroom door at some point, DeShanin Coleman, the building superintendent who lives on the third floor, told the Register.

“He (Salomon) said, ‘This is the type of person you’ve got to force out. He’s not going to leave on his own. What time does he go to work?’” Coleman recalled Wednesday.

Inspectors from the Livable City Initiative checked the structure for any other problems.

As for who left the chickens and fish, LCI Deputy Director Rafael Ramos told the Register, “We don’t know. We can’t prove it.”
