Crossing Guard on Life Support After Being Hit by Car in NJ: Police

Police say a 60-year-old crossing guard was seriously injured after she was hit by a car while on duty in northern New Jersey.

Jo-Ann Hans was struck on New Bridge Road in Bergenfield around 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to police. She was assisting Congregation Beth Abraham during Rosh Hashanah services at the time.

Witnesses told police the collision sent Hans airborne after she had signaled for the driver to stop.

Hans was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition. The Bergen Record reports Hans was unconscious and on life support at the hospital Tuesday night.

The motorist was issued a summons for careless driving, failure to obey a crossing guard and failure to stop for pedestrian crossing.
