Crimefighter Sliwa Offers NYC “Underbelly” Tours

In town visiting this week?

Skip the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building and peep out New York City's underbelly, thanks to Curtis Sliwa.

The Guardian Angels founder turned radio host has launched a three-hour "Underbelly Tour" of the South Bronx. Possible highlights include drug houses, money-laundering fronts and "chop shops" that break down stolen cars. Note to tourists: Such sights are hardly limited to the South Bronx.

Guests are transported on the No. 4 train, once known as the Mugger's Express. Now it's just called the Local Delay.

Sliwa concedes the area has improved dramatically. But he told the Daily News that visitors can still "get a flavor of what it was like."

More than 100 people have taken the tour, whose price is negotiable. Proceeds support the crime prevention network.

Sliwa is heard on WABC in New York, as well as in Boston, Los Angeles and Washington D.C.
