Crane Collapse Survivor Reunites With Rescuers

A man who was buried under five floors of rubble after a Manhattan crane collapse last year has had an emotional reunion with the firefighters who rescued him.

John Gallego hugs and thanks his rescuers in a WNBC-TV report that aired Friday, almost exactly a year after the construction crane crushed a townhouse and killed seven people on March 15, 2008. Gallego lived in the building and was stuck in the debris for about three hours.

He was able to use his cell phone to call his girlfriend. Firefighters carefully dug through the debris and slid down on a rope to reach him.

Gallego has had five surgeries and now uses a cane. But he told the television station he hopes to recover enough to play soccer again.
