Cops: Cook Stabs Himself, Restaurant Owner

Few clues as to why a cook at a Chinese restaurant in New Jersey stabbed himself several times and then fought with co-workers who tried to stop him.

New Providence police say the cook -- whose name wasn't released -- was working in the kitchen area Saturday night when he began to cut himself in the throat and stomach.

The restaurant's owner and some co-workers then jumped over a counter to subdue him, and the unidentified owner was stabbed in the hand during the struggle.

Meanwhile, many patrons fled the restaurant when they heard the melee and the employees' screaming just before 7 p.m., and police arrived a short time later.

The cook was taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital, while the restaurant owner was brought to Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Details on their conditions were not immediately available.
