Man Who Shot Cop in Legs Found Guilty of Attempted Murder

John Thomas was arrested around 7 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of a Pep Boys at Liberty Avenue and Merrick Boulevard

The man who shot a sergeant in both legs in 2012 in Queens has been found guilty of attempted murder, according to prosecutors.

John Thomas, 27, of Queens, was also convicted of aggravated assault on a police officer, assault on a police officer, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree assault, the Queens district attorney's office said.

Thomas shot then-44-year-old Sgt. Craig Bier in Jamaica as the officer was patrolling the area near 107th Avenue and Union Hall Street on Aug.9 as part of a plainclothes Queens gang-suppression unit, police said. At about 10:30 p.m., Bier attempted to stop a man on a bicycle, and the man fled.

Bier chased the man down a narrow alley and the man fired four shots at the sergeant, hitting him in both legs, according to police. Bier shot back six times.

Bier was rushed to Jamaica Hospital for treatment.

After a month-long search, Thomas was located and arrested in the parking lot of a Pep Boys at Liberty Avenue and Merrick Boulevard.

Thomas is set to be sentenced on July 29. He faces 40 years to life in prison.
