One summer can change everything, and in Hawkins, Indiana, the summer of 1985 is seen as a defining summer for a group of teenagers in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things.
The third installment of the series, Stranger Things 3, was released on Netflix on July 4, and Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park in Coney Island took the theme to heart when transforming several rides and aspects of the park for a Stranger Things takeover event during the holiday weekend.
The re-branding of the park from June 28 to July 7 featured large posters and signage throughout, Stranger Things gifts and tricked out rides such as the Bumper Cars, Tilt-a-Whirl and the iconic Wonder Wheel boasting in-show elements and photo opportunities.
With a gap of over 19 months between the releases of seasons two and three, the newest set of episodes have been long anticipated by fans of all ages. Stranger Things 3 contains eight episodes that feature many of the vital characters from the past two seasons, as well as a few new faces that play a large role in the kids’ summer.
With just eight episodes in the third season, some fans have already binged the entire season.
“I’m very excited [for new content],“ said Artavia Jarvis, a Deno’s park guest over the holiday weekend. “I just wished I hadn’t watched it all already.”
Several park guests were donning themed shirts throughout the Independence Day weekend, showing off some of the familiar sights and characters from the show and Hawkins. Approximately 1.5 million guests were estimated to have visited the park, according to Deno’s spokesman Ken Hochman, including over 750,000 park guests on the Fourth of July.
“Stranger Things fans came out enthusiastically to see the activation and enjoyed getting the customized photos, sunglasses, tattoos and slap bracelets," Hochman said. "Having Deno's Wonder Wheel Stranger-fied is a perfect design and concept match to the hit Netflix TV show, which broke all viewing records for Netflix.”
Deno’s Wonder Wheel is open seven days per week from noon to 10 p.m., weather permitting on Brooklyn’s famed Coney Island Boardwalk. Admission is free at all times.
Stranger Things 3 is now available for streaming on Netflix.
