Authorities say a bus driver is facing criminal charges after he slammed into nine vehicles at a traffic light last week.
South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said that 30-year-old Jamal Penten, of Lakewood, surrendered Monday to face assault by auto charges.
Police say he was driving the Suburban Transit bus recklessly when he hit the line of cars on Route 130 around 6:30 a.m. last Thursday. They say he became distracted for more than 1,000 feet before the collision and didn't brake.
Penten was released on $2,500 bail. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney to comment on his behalf. A phone number listed for him was out of service.
A 61-year-old woman suffered a fractured pelvis and ribs and a 35-year-old man fractured his back in the crash.
