Report of Falling Debris Shuts Down Street Near Columbus Circle

A piece of equipment used to offload construction materials from a 16th-floor freight elevator at Central Park Tower possibly fell to the ground Wednesday, forcing authorities to shut down a street near Columbus Circle as they investigated, officials say.

The Department of Buildings said the investigation is ongoing, but a preliminary review suggests the "drop plate" used to bridge the gap between the elevator and the 57th Street building may have fallen around noon after the elevator moved unexpectedly.

Officials said there is no indication glass or other debris fell to the street, which was shut down to traffic as a precaution while authorities investigated.

No injuries were reported.
