Long Island Family Fights Off Burglar Armed With Knife, Holds Him Outside Until Police Arrive, Officials Say

A Long Island family fought off a burglar armed with a knife in their home on Thanksgiving and held him outside until police arrived, officials said Friday.

Jeffrey Rice was charged with burglary, Suffolk County police said. He's scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

Rice allegedly entered an unlocked side door of the Cold Spring home, grabbed a knife from the kitchen and went upstairs, where he found a 7-year-old girl and her 85-year-old aunt.

He's accused of assaulting the elderly aunt, then the woman who owns the home confronted him. Her husband then arrived and, after a brief struggle, took the burglar outside, police said. The husband's brother and brother-in-law helped.

The family held the burglar outside until police arrived.

The aunt was treated at Huntington Hospital, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear if Rice had an attorney or someone who could speak on his behalf.
