Authorities have made an arrest in the stabbing death of a beloved New Jersey coach who was killed in a Jersey City park as he walked to church last weekend.
Hudson County prosecutors say 68-year-old Charles Lowy is charged with murder and two weapons offenses. The charges were announced Thursday, one day after Lowy was arrested in the neighborhood where 77-year-old Anthony Bello was killed around 8 a.m. Sunday.
Authorities say the stabbing occurred when the two men had an altercation at Pershing Field park, but further details have not been disclosed. Bello was found dead on a park bench and all officials said at the time was that his death was “suspicious.”
An autopsy determined that Bello died from a stab wound to his chest, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The community mourned Bello's death by lining the bench where he died with flowers and notes saying “Rest in Peace Coach Tony.”
“It’s shocking,” Jorainey Quinton, a friend of coach Bello said. “I feel very bad for his wife and his son, his daughter and his grandson, he talked about them all the time, he loved them."

Quinton added that Bello ”was a great man.”
"He was always so positive for the children, families, everyone," Quinton said. "He just wanted to see everyone happy, everyone succeed."
It wasn't known if Lowy has retained an attorney who could comment on the allegations.
