A 27-year-old Pennsylvania man was seriously hurt after jumping from a 45-foot cliff into the pool at the base of the Adams Creek falls at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area over the weekend, authorities said.
Park rangers were on patrol on the trail to the falls when they got a call about the injured man around 5 p.m. Sunday. It took rescue crews three hours to carry the man along the rugged 1.5-mile trail from the falls to the road, where he could be put in an ambulance and taken to a hospital.
The trail includes four creek crossings; at one spot, the man had to be raised and lowered over steep cliffs, authorities said.
Parks officials said Sunday marked the fifth time since April rangers responded to rescue calls about waterfall jumpers at Adams Creek. A parks service spokeswoman said jumping is "strictly prohibited," as is rock climbing and swimming.
