City Puts Brakes On Cars For Employees

Bloomberg administration cutting costs

Several city agencies have been ordered to give up about 700 city-owned vehicles in a move that could save $20 million over the next two years, according to a published report.

The New York Times reported that the police, parks and health departments are among those being asked to give up the "cherished perk for their workers."

The sour economy has prompted a handful of cost-cutting measures in Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration.

The Times story quoted a memo sent by Bloomberg this week, saying that "city agencies must relinquish at least 10 percent, or about 685, of their 6,800 nonemergency vehicles by the end of March."

The memo also said the agencies are required to "cut their overall vehicle expenses by roughly another 5 percent, either by relinquishing more cars or cutting down on fuel or maintenance costs."
