Fire Breaks Out at Citi Field: FDNY

A fire broke out inside Citi Field in Queens Wednesday afternoon, sending flames and smoke flaring from one of the entrances for several minutes before it was knocked out.

The blaze started in a display case in the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, according to the FDNY and the Mets.

Video on social media shows flames bursting just inside an entrance to the stadium, with heavy smoke billowing out.

The sprinklers did go off, fire officials say. The Mets said the fire was contained and extinguished before the FDNY arrived.

There was "minimal damage" and no one was hurt, the team said.

It's not clear what caused the fire. One witness said on Twitter said, "Unsure what happened but I heard a loud blast at Citi Field and then saw smoke and this fire."

The Mets are away, scheduled to play at Atlanta Braves Wednesday evening. The team returns home Thursday.
