$20K in Christmas Collections Stolen from Westchester Church

A thief or thieves got away with $2,000 in cash and up to $18,000 in checks that had been collected on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day masses at a Westchester church, officials say.

The burglary at the Church of the Magdalene in Pocantico Hills in Tarrytown happened Christmas morning, according to a spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York. It appears the thieves broke into the rectory, pried open a locked file cabinet and swiped the cash and checks.

Ninety percent of the donations that were stolen were checks, and parishioners were notified of the theft through a church messaging system, according to the church pastor.

Mount Pleasant police are investigating.
