Christie: NJ Won't Repay US for Tunnel Work

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie says the state will continue its fight to avoid repaying the federal government for money spent on the Hudson River rail tunnel project that he canceled in October.

The deadline for the state to pay $271 million or file a formal appeal was Tuesday night.

Christie said on a news radio station appearance Tuesday that New Jersey does not intend to pay. A Christie spokesman said the administration would have more details on its appeal on Wednesday.

The tunnel would have doubled rail capacity between New Jersey and New York at a time when train service between the states is at capacity. Christie spiked the project because of potential cost overruns. At the time, the $8.7 billion project was the most  expensive public works project under way in the nation.
