Chris Christie is now the most unpopular governor in the country, according to a new survey.
The Morning Consult Governor Approval rankings released Tuesday reveal just 25 percent of New Jerseyans approve of their Republican governor. Seventy-one percent disapprove of him.
The report comes on the heels of the George Washington Bridge lane-closure scandal that saw two former top Christie aides get sentenced to prison.
Christie's approval numbers started going down after he endorsed Donald Trump for president in early 2016, according to The Morning Consult, and the continuing slide was enough to knock Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback off his perch as the county's most unpopular governor.
Currentlym the two most popular governors are Republicans in traditionally blue states, according to The Morning Consult: Charlie Baker of Massachusetts and Larry Hogan of Maryland.
Andrew Cuomo of New York gets a 62 percent approval rating, with 31 percent of voters disapproving of his performance. Dan Malloy of Connecticut, meanwhile, remains the most unpopular Democratic governor in the country, with just 29 percent of voters in the state approving of his job performance. Sixty-six percent say they disapprove, the survey found.
More than 85,000 registered voters in the U.S. evaluated the job performance of key elected officials for the Morning Consult's weekly online national polling to determine the latest rankings.
