Police say they're looking for a hit-and-run driver who critically injured a 6-year-old girl in the Bronx Tuesday evening.
The girl had been crossing the street at 172nd Street and Harrod Avenue in Soundview after being dropped off by a family member Tuesday evening when a vehicle hit her, police said.
EMS found the girl conscious with facial trauma and took her to Jacobi Hospital. Although she in is in critical condition, officials say she is expected to survive.
The girl's mother, Kadiatou Barry, told News 4 she suffered a number of facial fractures.
The driver initially stopped after hitting the girl, but drove off after Barry yelled, she said.
"I saw him and I yelled, 'He killed my daughter. Help me people. Stop him!'" Barry recalled. "After that, he ran away."
Police are looking for the driver and the vehicle, which witnesses say is an SUV.
Barry described her daughter as a "gentle" girl who "cares about people a lot."

"She's a very sweet girl," she said. "I hope she makes it. I don't want her to go."
