Girl, 13, Arrested in Attempted Central Park Robbery

Police arrested a 13-year-old girl in connection with the attempted robbery of a woman in Central Park earlier this week.

Authorities had been looking for two children -- a girl about 12 to 14 years old, a boy 10 to 11 years old -- after the woman told police the two tried to steal her cell phone and purse when she was walking near Fifth Avenue and 107th Street at about 8 p.m. Monday.

Police were also looking to question a girl described as being about 14 who was seen talking to the children after they allegedly tried to rob the 38-year-old woman.

The 13-year-old girl arrested late Thursday was charged with second-degree attempted robbery. It wasn't immediately clear if she was the one accused of trying to steal the woman's cell phone or if she was the girl seen talking to the other children after the attempt failed.

Meanwhile, residents were shocked the alleged attempted robbers were so young.

"People robbing people, at 10 years old? That's crazy," said Berle Easton, who lives near the park.

"It makes me wonder who's at home wondering where they are," said David Chapman, a parkgoer.
