Census: NYC Population Keeps Growing

Population losses continue across much of upstate New York, while New York City's population keeps growing modestly.
    
That's according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates being released today.
    
The 2008 estimates for counties and metropolitan areas look at the 53 counties north of Westchester and Rockland. Out of those 53 counties, 33 posted population losses of less than 1 percent over the year.
    
That includes Erie County, which includes Buffalo, with a 0.3 percent population loss to 909,845. Rural Lewis County in northern New York had the steepest rate of decline -- 0.8 percent to 26,176.
    
The fastest gaining counties in the state were Staten Island and Orange County, which both grew nearly 1 percent over the year.
    
New York state's population grew by 0.3 percent to 19.5 million, while the New York City metro region area grew 0.4 percent.
