Cardinal Egan Could Be Out of Hospital in Days

It's believed New York Cardinal Edward Egan could be out of the hospital in a day or two.

Egan was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan on Saturday with stomach pain. Doctors then discovered a heart condition.

Spokesman Joe Zwilling says the stomach pain has subsided. Doctors delayed the implantation of a pacemaker while he gets back his strength. No further details have been made public.

It's not clear whether Egan will be able to celebrate any of the Holy Week and Easter Masses at St. Patrick's Cathedral this week.

The 77-year-old cardinal retires April 15. He'll be succeeded by Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

The archdiocese serves 2.5 million Catholics in New York City and its northern suburbs.
