Good Samaritans Rescue Driver After SUV Plunges Into Long Island Canal

A 73-year-old driver was rescued by Good Samaritans after his SUV crashed into a canal on Long Island, witnesses and police say.

The Deer Park man's Nissan SUV plunged into the water on Shore Road near Virginia Road in Babylon on Friday morning, witnesses say. Several people rushed to his aid, helping the man out of the waterlogged vehicle before emergency responders arrived.

The man, identified as Charles Jacob, was taken to the hospital after the rescue and is in good condition, his wife told NBC 4 New York. She said he has a heart condition, but it's not clear if it played a role in the crash.

A hospital spokesman said Jacob simply blacked out behind the wheel.

The crash is under investigation. Jacob's wife, who did not want to appear on camera, said she wants to find the unidentified good Samaritans to thank them for rescuing her husband, a father of four and grandfather of 10.

Photos from the scene show the late-model SUV sitting in the water near several fishing boats. Town work crews were repairing some of the damage Friday afternoon.
