A 2-year-old boy and his mother are fighting for their lives nearly 48 hours after they and eight others were struck by a car that jumped a curb in Brooklyn over the weekend, officials said.
Denim McLein and his mother, Wendy, were among those hit by a Lincoln sedan that crashed through a bus stop at the corner of Utica and Church avenues in East Flatbush shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday. After hitting the pedestrians, the car plowed into a sidewalk shed, causing it to collapse, authorities said.
McLein's aunt told the New York Post the little boy was likely brain-dead after the accident and his mother is in a semi-coma. Wendy McLein owns a nightclub in Bedford-Stuyvesant called Denim's Cafe.
Two other people were hospitalized in critical condition following the crash, but updates on their conditions were not immediately available Monday.
Police said the driver told investigators that her brakes failed. She and a male passenger in the car with her were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening back and neck injuries, authorities said.
The driver passed a Breathalyzer test and was not charged.
