Car Hits 2 Pedestrians, Slams Into Building in Bronx: FDNY

An out-of-control minivan struck two pedestrians before slamming into several businesses on a busy street in the Bronx Monday evening, authorities say.

Police said the woman driving the minivan in Baychester was cut off by another vehicle and swerved out of the way onto the sidewalk at 3477 Boston Road at about 6:45 p.m. She hit two pedestrians, who were taken to Jacobi Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The vehicle also hit four shop fronts, leaving behind shattered glass and a bent gate.

Others on the busy intersection were lucky. One man said he sat frozen inside a restaurant lounge as the car appeared to come right toward him.

"I couldn't move because I was right in the corner store," he said. "I would want to get away, but I couldn't."

The restaurant, jewelry store, insurance office and deli were closed for business. The deli owners worry it could be a while before they reopen.

"The front over here is all damage. We don't think we'll be able to open," said Quick Stop deli co-owner Mukhtar Murshed.

Investigators from the Buildings Department were on the scene assessing whether there was any structural damage.
