1 Dead, 3 Hurt in Chain-Reaction Crash on Long Island: Police

One man died in a chain-reaction collision involving a pickup truck, a Subaru and another vehicle on Long Island early Monday that spewed debris all over the roadway and left multiple vehicles destroyed, authorities say.

Three other people were taken to hospitals, two with serious injuries, after the 3:20 a.m. accident near Express Drive South and Route 111 in Hauppauge, police said.

Authorities say the 30-year-old Subaru driver, Fernando Ramirez Jr., hit the pickup truck at the intersection, and then the two vehicles careened into a 2004 Infiniti traveling the opposite way. The pickup truck driver -- identified as 31-year-old Daniel Granados of Central Islip -- died at the scene. His passenger Richard Fischer, the 32-year-old owner of the truck, along with Ramirez, were seriously hurt.

The driver of the third vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Footage from the scene showed the pickup truck completely demolished, appeared to be nearly t-boned, and another vehicle heavily damaged. Yellow tarps covered the outside of the truck as more than a dozen emergency personnel swarmed the scene. Debris littered the road.

Ramirez was charged with reckless endangerment, marijuana possession, unlicensed driving and other crimes. He will be arraigned when he is physically able, authorities said. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.
