At least two people were hurt when a FedEx truck and a car were involved in an accident that sent the smaller vehicle plowing straight through a deli in Brooklyn Thursday -- and a woman who works in the store ended up in cuffs, according to officials and law enforcement sources familiar with the case.
The sources tell News 4 the delivery truck rear-ended the smaller vehicle and the impact flung it into the store, burying it so far inside it wasn't even visible from Chopper 4's aerial view of the Cropsey Avenue intersection in Bath Beach.
A woman inside the deli nearly got hit by the vehicle as it plowed inside. That woman got into an argument with the 72-year-old driver who had been rear-ended and slapped her in the face, sources say. She was taken into custody.
News 4 spoke to that woman -- and she says she didn't touch her.
"I did not touch this woman. I did not touch this woman," she said. "I took her glasses, I did. I crushed her glasses, and I am guilty of that. And I'm not saying that's right, but it happened so fast, and I got arrested."
The woman said it happened so fast -- the car just plowed into the store -- and she reacted off adrenaline.
"I couldn't move. I was pinned up against the ATM machine and I couldn't move, there was glass all over," she said. "I had to crawl through the car to get out and the car was running. They were like, 'What if it explodes?' The whole car was in the store."
She says the driver was holding her glasses and she grabbed them from her and threw them on the floor.
"I was mad. It's better than hitting her," she said. "I shouldn't have done that but it's done, what am I gonna do? Trust me when I tell you -- if I touched that woman -- everyone would know I touched that woman."
Officials say the 72-year-old woman was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be severe. The FedEx driver refused medical attention at the scene. Details on the charges against the woman in the deli weren't clear.
