Old Cannonball Mysteriously Turns Up in New Jersey Backyard

Authorities sent to investigate a strange object in a New Jersey backyard earlier this week found a big, rusty cannonball.

Madison Police Chief Darren Dachisen was closest to the Greenwood Avenue home and first to the scene. Police say the homeowner handed him a "heavy ball," which was later determined to be a cannonball.

Dachisen placed it "gently" back on the ground, and the bomb squad responded. The weapon was turned over to the U.S. Army for analysis.

It's not clear where the cannonball came from, nor how it got to the backyard of the home. Police said it appeared to be quite old.
