Woman Found Dead on Tracks at Canal Street Subway Station

Police are investigating the death of a woman in her 30s who was found on the subway tracks at Canal Street in Manhattan Sunday afternoon.

Authorities responding to a 911 call about a person on the tracks of the southbound No. 1 train shortly after 1 p.m. found the woman unconscious and unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

It wasn't immediately clear how the woman ended up on the tracks, nor was it known if she was hit by a train. Subways were shut down in both directions in the area for a time while police investigated.

A medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing.
